Hello and welcome to The Pull! Each week, we (Ghost, Reed & Samantha) put together a definitive list of comics we’re most looking forward to reading. Then we send it off to you, to pick and choose from our pull list as you please.
This week, we have 13 titles for your perusal. Did we miss something really great? Let us know in the comments or hit us up on Twitter @ItsThePull!
Assassin Nation, Vol. 1 TP
Writer: Kyle Starks
Artist: Erica Henderson
Letterer: Deron Bennet
Publisher: Image Comics/Skybound
Samantha: This series is fast and bloody and “wild with murder” — if you missed it, now’s your chance to grab the trade and dive in!
Black Panther And The Agents Of Wakanda #1
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Lan Medina
Colorist: Marcio Menyz
Letterer: VC’s Joe Sabino
Cover Artist: Jorge Molina
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: I love Jim Zub’s superhero team writing. I haven’t read the Avengers run that this team comes from, but I don’t think that matters — this feels accessible and action-packed and it involves Okoye and Janet, so I’m in.
Bloodlust & Bonnets
Cartoonist: Emily McGovern
Publisher: Andrews McMeel
Samantha: More queer, polyamorous, fantastical historical fiction, please! If you aren’t familiar with Bloodlust & Bonnets, you can check out a preview at Emily McGovern’s website — it’s absolutely delightful and I’m stoked it’s a graphic novel now!
Death's Head #3
Writer: Tini Howard
Artist: Kei Zama
Colorist: Felipe Sobreiro
Letterer: VC’s Travis Lanham
Cover Artists: Nick Roche & Felipe Sobreiro
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: Honestly I’m not sure how Tini Howard manages to tug on my heart strings AND provide gripping robot action at the same time. I don’t think I’ve ever read a series like this and I’m not sure I’ll read another one, either. PICK IT UP. Especially if you love gay boys and robots.
Drawing Power
Editor: Diane Noomin
Introduction: Roxane Gay
Publisher: Abrams ComicArts
Samantha: I wrote a full review of this incredible anthology for The Beat, but I wanted to reiterate here that Drawing Power is powerful, intense, and evocative — hats off to every creator featured herein.
Guts
Cartoonist: Raina Telgemeier
Publisher: Scholastic Graphix
Samantha: I’m stoked for a new Rain Telgemeier book on multiple levels, but especially because I can relate to this one on a very personal level.
House Of X #5
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Designer: Tom Muller
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: Red highlighted issues that are listed on the HOX/POX master list in the back of every issue seem like a massive sledgehammer to what you THINK you know about marvel’s merry mutants. A penultimate issue that is also highlighted red...RIP all of us.
Samantha: I’m… scared.
Magnificent Ms. Marvel #7
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Artists: Joey Vasquez
Colorist: Ian Herring
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Cover Artist: Eduard Petrovich
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: This run went from spacetime wackiness to intense, emotional family drama really fast — but the pacing hasn’t suffered for it, nor has the storytelling. Now that Kamala’s superhero identity is once more a secret from her parents, her dad is dealing with a terminal illness, and it feels like everything is falling apart in a big way, but I’m trusting this creative team to see Kamala and the reader through everything.
The Man Who Came Down the Attic Stairs
Cartoonist: Celine Loup
Publisher: Archaia
Samantha: It’s spooky season! The title of this graphic novel is low-key terrifying in and of itself, especially with the perspective on the cover. I’m very excited to curl up with a blanket and a cup of tea and scare the heck out of myself reading this story.
Once And Future #2
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Dan Mora
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
Letterer: Ed Dukeshire
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Samantha: Since its debut, this series has been turned into an ongoing and speculator hype seems to have only increased. I really enjoyed the debut issue and I’m curious how the story will expand now that there’s more room (and time) to play, so I’m definitely along for the ride.
Strayed #2
Writer: Carlos Giffoni
Artist: Juan Doe
Letterer: Matt Krotzer
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Samantha: Yet again: CATS IN SPACE. What more do you need?
Valkyrie: Jane Foster #3
Writers: Jason Aaron & Al Ewing
Artists: Cafu, Ramón Perez, Cian Tormey, Roberto Poggi & Frazer Irving
Colorists: Jesus Aburtov & Frazer Irving
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Cover Artists: Mahmud Asrar & Dave McCaig
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: This issue features five (5!!!) artists, which I’m really excited about, because from the cover teaser, Jane is clearly about to Go Through It. It’s always interesting to see how multiple artists can add something new and different to a single arc, and I absolutely love the writing in Valkyrie, so I have this feeling it’s all going to be really stellar.
Xena Warrior Princess #6
Writer: Vita Ayala
Artist: Olympia Sweetman
Colorist: Rebecca Nalty
Letterer: Ariana Maher
Cover Artist: David Mack
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Samantha: This series continues to hit all of my buttons, so I continue to recommend! If you haven’t caught up yet, get on it!
