Age Of X-Man: Prisoner X TP
Writer: Vita Ayala
Artist: Germán Peralta
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: VC’s Joe Sabino
Cover Artist: Patch Zircher
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: Prisoner X was a standout highlight of the Age of X-Man and now that all these trades are coming out you have ZERO excuse to skip it. Vita Ayala and Germán Peralta do career-outstanding work on this book. Don’t miss it this go around.
Samantha: The best mini-series in the Age of X-Man event, hands down.
Crowded #9
Writer: Christopher Sebela
Artists: Ro Stein & Ted Brandt
Colorist: Tríona Farrell
Letterer: Cardinal Rae
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: Crowded continues to be brilliant — read it!
Dark Red #6
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Corin Howell
Letterer: Marshall Dillon
Cover Artist: Meghan Hetrick
Publisher: Aftershock Comics
Ghost: Dark Red is bloody, violent, and it’s got something to say. Oh, and if you haven’t noticed, the cover on this issue is GREAT.
Die #7
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Stephanie Hans
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: I cried my eyes out at Die #6, especially after reading Kieron Gillen’s letter about the story inspo. Now that the party are being forced to reckon with their past in an even bigger way, the stakes are getting higher and the risk/reward ratio is severely unbalanced… which makes everything very precarious and borderline petrifying.
Ghost: Not sure what I can say that Sam hasn’t already stated above. Read Die. Read it and be emotionally compromised like the rest of us.
Ghost-Spider Annual (2019) #1
Writer: Vita Ayala
Artist: Pere Pérez
Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artists: Ema Lupacchino & David Curiel
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: Gwen Stacy has landed in Murderworld, but Arcade seems to have designed this game for Peter Parker. This should be interesting...
House Of X #4
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Designer: Tom Muller
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: We’ve gotten into the thick of it now. After last issues cliffhanger and the fact that we’re quickly careening towards the climax of both series. I don’t know about you, but I’ve got to put on my seatbelt so I don’t get my emotions too bruised.
Samantha: I don’t know if the explosion at the end of House of X #3 was a true fake-out or something entirely different, but I do know whatever happens this week is going to lead us into the back half of HOX/POX, so it’s going to have consequences… or will it?
Lois Lane #3
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Mike Perkins
Colorist: Paul Mounts
Letterer: Simon Bowland
Publisher: DC Comics
Samantha: I’m rapidly becoming obsessed with this series; the first arc is called “Enemy of the People” and it has such a distinctive, true-to-life tone that is so, so good. Heart-pounding, evocative, intense — don’t sleep on this.
Over The Garden Wall: Soulful Symphonies #2
Writer: Birdie Willis
Artist: Rowan MacColl
Colorist: Dean Stuart
Letterer: Mike Fiorentino
Cover Artist: Keezy Young
Publisher: KaBOOM!
Samantha: I’m so deeply stressed out about Wirt and Greg joining this sketchy theater in this sketchy ghost town!!! Everyone needs to listen to Beatrice more often.
Pretty Deadly The Rat #1
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Emma Rios
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: It’s baaaaaaaack! After three years, Pretty Deadly returns with a new mini-series this week and trust me — you’re not going to want to miss this one.
Something Is Killing The Children #1
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Werther Dell’Edera
Colorist: Miguel Muerto
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: The season for horror comics is upon us! Something Is Killing the Children shows some pretty brutal killings of kids (as the title suggests), but there’s also a mysterious new monster hunter on the case and Werther Dell’Edera’s art is gorgeous, if gruesome. If you want something that will freak you out, pick this up.
Spider-Gwen Ghost-Spider, Volume 2: Impossible Year TP
Writer: Seanan McGuire
Artist: Takeshi Miyazawa
Colorist: Ian Herring
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Bengal
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider is a flawless run with some of the best character work in contemporary superhero comics; the series dropped “Spider-Gwen” from the title this month and continued with the same creative team and story, and it keeps getting better and better. Catch up and come along for the ride!
Web Of Black Widow #1
Writer: Jody Houser
Artist: Stephen Mooney
Colorist: Tríona Farrell
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit
Cover Artist: Junggeun Yoon
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: I’m definitely ready for Natasha to get her own ongoing again, but for now, I’m loving the creative teams who are taking her on in various mini-series. This is no exception — with Jody Houser, Stephen Mooney, and Tríona Farrell steering this ship, it’s bound to be one helluva thrilling spy story.
Witchy OGN
Creator: Ariel Slamet Ries
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: Lion Forge Comics
Samantha: Magic, mayhem, and queerness. What more could you ask for? In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair — but if your hair is too long, you’re an enemy who will be burned. Ariel Slamet Ries’ worldbuilding in Witchy is really intricate. Definitely pick this up (out this week in comic shops, next week in bookstores).
X-Force, Volume 2: The Counterfeit King TP
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artists: Dylan Burnett & Damian Couceiro
Colorist: Erick Arciniega & Jesus Aburtov
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit & Joe Caramagna
Cover Artists: Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: Ed Brisson’s X-Force revival was hit and miss, but the second half (#6-#10) — now collected in this trade — is a blast. Pick it up.
