Hello and welcome to The Pull! Each week, we (Ghost, Reed & Samantha) put together a definitive list of comics we’re most looking forward to reading. Then we send it off to you, to pick and choose from our pull list as you please.
This week, we have 11 titles for your perusal. Did we miss something really great? Let us know in the comments or hit us up on Twitter @ItsThePull!
Age Of X-Man: Nextgen TP
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artist: Marcus To
Colorist: Jason Keith
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Chris Bachalo
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: If you missed the Age Of X-Man event (or decided to skip it), now you can check out each mini-series in its respective TPB. I do hope there’s a reading order somewhere in these trades, because this event does work best when it’s read as one continuous arc… regardless, this was one of the better minis in this series and Marcus To’s art alone is worth the price point! This series also makes me want a Glob solo book, like, yesterday.
Ghost: If you slept on Age of X-Man I’m not really sure you know what you missed. NextGen, the tale of the teenagers that got swept up in Nate Grey’s alternate reality was a sight to behold. With the fate of the world and friendships on the line, you’d have to go back to Christina Strain’s Gen X to find a teen book this good.
Age Of X-Man The Marvelous X-Men TP
Writers: Zac Thompson & Lonnie Nadler
Artist: Marco Failla
Colorist: Matt Milla
Letterer: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover Artist: Phil Noto
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: I guess Marvelous was the flagship title of the AOX event; this trade collects that mini, as well as the Alpha and Omega oneshots. This series stands pretty well on its own, so if you want a taste of AOX, this is a good place to start.
Canto #3
Writer: David M. Booher
Artist: Drew Zucker
Colorist: Vittorio Astone
Letterer: Deron Bennett
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Samantha: I said on Twitter that Canto is perfect for people who love sentient robots but don’t necessarily love sentient robots who want to murder us all, and I stand by that! This series is incredibly, achingly tender and I love it so, so much. Quite frankly, I can see this landing firmly in my top five comics of 2019.
Daredevil #10
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Penciler: Lalit Kumar Sharma
Inker: Jay Leisten
Colorist: Java Tartaglia
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Julian Totino Tedesco
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: This series is messy and my feelings are complicated but this arc concludes with issue #10 and I’m really curious to see where things go next.
Death's Head #2
Writer: Tini Howard
Artist: Kei Zama
Colorist: Felipe Sobreiro
Letterer: VC’s Travis Lanham
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: Look. Killer mercenary robots maybe sounds like a tried and true trope, but I bet you’ve never seen anything like Death's Head. I loved the first issue; I loved Billy and Teddy wandering into the story maybe not so unwittingly. I’m a big fan of Tini Howard’s and I just need more of this. So, you will read Death's Head #2, yes?
Fearless #2
Writers: Seanan McGuire, Karla Pacheco & Eve Ewing
Artists: Claire Roe, Iolanda Zanfardino & Alitha Martinez
Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letterer: Cardinal Rae
Cover Artist: Yasmine Putri
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: This is such a kick-ass anthology series! Each issue features new creative teams and heroes, which is awesome — but I must admit, reading Fearless makes it even more apparent how many talented non-men work for Marvel. I’d love to see these women take on more titles, more heroes, and more stories.
Ghost-Spider #1
Writer: Seanan McGuire
Artist: Takeshi Miyazawa
Colorist: Ian Herring
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Jorge Molina
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS SERIES! It’s only been just over a month since Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider concluded, but it’s really exciting to see this creative team continuing with her character as Gwen swings into a “normal” life on Earth-616. She’ll still be living on Earth-65, but her celeb status complicates things like school and work and not mooching off her dad. On 616, she’s just Ghost-Spider — and that makes all the difference.
Livewire #9
Writer: Vita Ayala
Artist: Tana Ford
Colorist: Kelly Fitzpatrick
Letterer: Saida Temofonte
Cover Artist: Stacey Lee
Publisher: Valiant Entertainment
Samantha: It’s new arc time! After months on the run, Amanda McKee gets an offer to go public, putting her in the political spotlight — but is it worth it? I’ve gushed about this series all year and having read this issue early, I can honestly say that my feelings have not changed. Vita Ayala’s writing is whip-smart and super clean, and Tana Ford’s art paired with Kelly Fitzpatrick’s colors create a cool new vibe that feels right for this arc!
Powers Of X #3
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artists: R.B. Silva & Adriano Di Benedetto
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Designer: Tom Muller
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: At this point I’m not sure if I should strap in, buckle up, or do all of these things. The reading order gets shaken up a little this week and who knows what that actually means for the story. We’ve got some major pieces at play here...let’s see how this shakes out with all of our other merry mutants.
Samantha: We’ve hit our first double header in HOX/POX, with two consecutive issues of Powers followed by two consecutive issues of House. I have to be honest and say that I’m not nearly as invested in what’s happening in Powers as I am in what’s happening in House… but I’m keeping an open mind, because these sister series have at the very least shown me that anything — anything — is possible with Hickman steering the ship.
Strayed #1
Writer: Carlos Giffoni
Artist: Juan Doe
Letterer: Matt Krotzer
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Samantha: CATS IN SPACE! That’s basically all I need to know about this series to check it out.
Valkyrie: Jane Foster #2
Writers: Jason Aaron & Al Ewing
Artist: Cafu
Colorist: Jesus Aburtov
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Cover Artists: Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: I really enjoyed Valkyrie: Jane Foster #1. I really can’t wait to see Jane bash Bullseye across the face with the all weapon.
Samantha: BULLSEYE?! I loved the first issue of this series and the ending was honestly a really delightful (if terrifying) surprise. I’m so here to see Jane whoop his ass — he may be able to turn any weapon he holds into the deadliest weapon in the universe (and he’s currently holding an especially deadly sword), but Jane is not messing around… So let’s do this!
