The Pull #21: On Sale 8/7/2019
Hello and welcome to The Pull! Each week, we (Ghost, Reed & Samantha) put together a definitive list of comics we’re most looking forward to reading. Then we send it off to you, to pick and choose from our pull list as you please.
This week, we have 9 titles for your perusal. Did we miss something really great? Let us know in the comments or hit us up on Twitter @ItsThePull!
Black Cat #3
Writer: Jed MacKay
Artist: Travel Foreman
Flashback Artist: Michael Dowling
Colorist: Brian Reber
Letterer: Ferran Delgado
Cover Artists: J. Scott Campbell & Sabine Rich
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: Felicia Hardy, just take my heart. Seeing Black Cat on a solo title is amazing and I love that this series showcases her competence as well as her quick thinking, even as it runs pell-mell into total chaos. I love that this series is ongoing and that it seems to be doing well so far; I hope it continues for a long time.
Champions, Volume 1: Beat The Devil TP
Writer: Jim Zub
Artists: Steven Cummings & Juanan Ramírez
Colorists: Marcio Menyz & Federico Blee
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Kim Jacinto
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: I dove into this Champions run without having read this particular team before (but loving their solo adventures) and it’s fantastic. The first trade collects issues #1-6, which is not only a good length for an arc but also a nice size for a TPB; although this series is ending with issue #10 (ugh), it’s definitely worth catching up! Issue #8 is out this week, too!
Coffin Bound #1
Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: Dani
Colorist: Brad Simpson
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: This debut is super creepy. I’m always wary of grindhouse stories, because they can be super hit or miss, but I’m really intrigued by just How Much is happening in this issue, and the world that the creative team is building. Definitely worth picking up, but be warned: there’s some serious body horror and gore.
Crowded #8
Writer: Christopher Sebela
Artists: Ro Stein & Ted Brandt
Colorist: Tríona Farrell
Letterer: Cardinal Rae
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: Crowded is getting increasingly weird in the most delightful way. This series was 100% shafted at the Eisners this year, which is a real shame. If you haven’t caught up, the first trade is available and the new arc started with issue #7 last month!
Daredevil #9
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Penciler: Lalit Kumar Sharma
Inker: Jay Leisten
Colorist: Java Tartaglia
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Julian Totino Tedesco
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: If anything, this Daredevil arc really leans into how messy Matt can be, not just as Daredevil but as Matt Murdock. It’s a really interesting character exploration… and I’m curious as to where it all leads.
Die #6
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Stephanie Hans
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Image Comics
Ghost: I’m not really sure what more I can say about DIE that hasn’t been said before. It’s gorgeous, dark, imaginative and it’s spawned an actual beta of the TTRPG that Ashe and company have been consumed with. If you missed the first give issues, give it a shot. #6 will most likely be a whole new game, no pun intended.
Samantha: Die returns this week with a brand new arc and the timing could not be more perfect. Tabletop is continuing to gain prescience among new fans and this series is surely contributing to that… although, admittedly, as much as I joke about wanting to jump into stories, I think actually ending up in a fantasy game like this one would be downright terrifying. I’ll just experience it vicariously. Thanks!
House Of X #2
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Designer: Tom Muller
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: House of X #2 has been hyped as the paradigm shift. I’m not sure what Jonathan Hickman has in store for us, but I do know that I’m here for this all the way to the end. I feel like with this weekly schedule we’re just mainlining this new status quo. I’m equal parts scared and excited and know that no matter what happens, it will be a bright new day for mutants.
Samantha: Something wicked this way comes. Whatever happens in this issue of House of X, Marvel is keeping it on strict lockdown, which has me more intrigued than I’d like to admit. That said, the formatting and exposition in issue #1 grabbed my attention, even if Powers of X #1 lost me a bit. Let’s see where this goes...
Lois Lane #2
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Mike Perkins
Colorist: Paul Mounts
Letterer: Simon Bowland
Publisher: DC Comics
Samantha: If I could describe the heart-pounding, stomach-dropping feeling that Lois Lane #1 gave me, I would. Give me all the hard-hitting journalism stories focused on women who get shit done. I will absolutely never tire of a well-crafted story in this vein, and Lois Lane absolutely delivers.
Over The Garden Wall: Soulful Symphonies #1
Writer: Birdie Willis
Artist: Rowan MacColl
Colorist: Dean Stuart
Letterer: Mike Fiorentino
Cover Artist: Keezy Young
Publisher: KaBOOM!
Samantha: I really love Over the Garden Wall and this series ALSO appeals to my theater kid sensibilities. There’s something especially creepy about a theater town filled with stages and no people… I’m still sad that this cartoon didn’t live longer, but I’m glad BOOM! keeps producing comics set in its universe.
