Hello and welcome to The Pull! Each week, we (Ghost, Reed & Samantha) put together a definitive list of comics we’re most looking forward to reading. Then we send it off to you, to pick and choose from our pull list as you please.
This week, we have 9 titles for your perusal. Did we miss something really great? Let us know in the comments or hit us up on Twitter @ItsThePull!
Dungeons And Dragons: A Darkened Wish #2
Writer: B. Dave Walters
Artist: Tess Fowler
Colorist: Jay Fotos
Letterer: Tom B. Long
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Samantha: It’s been a few months since the first issue of Dungeons and Dragons: A Darkened Wish hit shelves in March, but that issue felt like the start to a really fantastic fantasy story with a great core cast of characters. I’m excited to see where the adventure leads next, especially with Fowler on art.
Fearless #1
Writers: Seanan McGuire, Leah Williams & Kelly Thompson
Artists: Claire Roe, Nina Vakueva & Carmen Carnero
Colorists: Rachelle Rosenberg & Tamra Bonvillain
Letterer: Janice Chiang
Cover Artist: Yasmine Putri
Publisher: Marvel
Samantha: Fearless #1 is the first in Marvel’s all-women anthology series, showcasing some of the most badass women in Marvel both on- and off-page. I love all of these creators and the characters that are featured, so it’s a no-brainer to pick this up! If you’re on the fence, check out this preview.
House Of X #1
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Designer: Tom Muller
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: The HOX is upon us. I know that probably sounds like a curse, but it’s the truth. Everyone who’s anyone has had something to say about the apparent status quo shift that takes place inside of this first book of what’s essentially a 12-issues series (spread across two titles) running across three months. I’m excited to see what Hickman brings to the table and even more excited about what seems to be happening AFTER this series and Powers of X come to an end Pick this one up, I don’t think you want to miss it.
Samantha: Here we fucking go! Jonathan Hickman has a multi-year plan to relaunch Marvel’s entire X-line and it all starts here. This issue purportedly changes everything, for mutantkind and the Marvel Universe as a whole. I’m so ready.
Invisible Kingdom #5
Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Christian Ward
Letterer: Sal Cipriano
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics/Berger Books
Samantha: The first arc of this series has been a truly wild ride, and it concludes in issue #5, on sale this NCBD. I’m astonished at how much Wilson and Ward have managed to pack into this story, laying the groundwork not just for this arc, but for future arcs as well. If you haven’t been keeping up with this, I highly suggest you check it out!
Livewire #8
Writer: Vita Ayala
Artist: Kano
Letterer: Saida Temofonte
Cover Artist: Kenneth Rocafort
Publisher: Valiant Entertainment
Samantha: Every issue of Livewire is better than the last as we head into the conclusion of the second arc. Valiant has some truly dynamic characters and Vita Ayala’s writing on this series is stunning, as is the art and lettering by Kano and Said Temofonte, respectively. I think I look forward to new issues of this series more than any other that I’m currently reading, and that doesn’t seem like it will change anytime soon.
Magnificent Ms. Marvel #5
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Artists: Minkyu Jung & Juan Vlasco
Colorist: Ian Herring
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Cover Artist: Eduard Petrovich
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: IT’S NEW COSTUME DAY! This wacky space plot has been an utter delight and I can’t wait for Kamala’s new costume to be revealed in this issue, along with whatever happens in this major battle. Her world is changing and growing, and the one thing she’s always been good at is adapting — so let’s see how much ass she kicks in these slick new duds!
Miles Morales: Spider-Man Vol. 1: Straight Out of Brooklyn
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Artist: Javier Garrón
Colorist: David Curiel
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit
Cover Artist: Brian Stelfreeze
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: If you, for some reason, have not been following this excellent Miles Morales series, now is your chance to catch up with the first TPB, which collects issues #1-6. Then you can pick up #7 and #8 just in time for #9, which comes out in a couple weeks. I mean it when I say that this series is phenomenal.
Self/Made Vol. 1
Writer: Mat Groom
Artist: Eduardo Ferigato
Colorist: Marcelo Costa
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: Self/Made has been on the periphery of my radar for some time, but I didn’t pick up the single issues because, frankly, I had too many titles on my pull list already when it debuted. However, the dressing on this trade is stunning and flipping through it gave me that feeling of intrigue and delight that makes reading comics so much fun — so I’ll be picking this up for sure and then reading and talking about it, at the very least on Twitter. Join me?
Valkyrie: Jane Foster #1
Writers: Jason Aaron & Al Ewing
Artist: Cafu
Colorist: Jesus Aburtov
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Cover Artists: Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: To be frank, ever since the MCU presentation in Hall H on Saturday, my thoughts have been a constant whir primarily consisting of Valkyrie and Jane Foster. It’s super convenient that this title debuts this week, because I don’t know if I’ve ever been “in the mood” for a Thor-adjacent comic until now, and I want to consume as much of this world as I possibly can. This creative team has proven they can handle this subject matter and do it well, so I’m excited to pick this up and dive right in.
