Hello and welcome to The Pull! Each week, we (Ghost, Reed & Samantha) put together a definitive list of comics we’re most looking forward to reading. Then we send it off to you, to pick and choose from our pull list as you please.
This week, we have 7 titles for your perusal. Did we miss something really great? Let us know in the comments or hit us up on Twitter @ItsThePull!
Blackbird, Vol. 1
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Jen Bartel
Layout Artist: Paul Reinwand
Colorist: Tríona Farrell
Letterer: Jodi Wynne
Publisher: Image Comics
Samantha: I’ve said before that it took a while for Blackbird to really grab me, but something about it — in spite of a rocky first issue — kept me coming back. I’m glad I didn’t give up, because this magical series is really fun and combines a lot of my favorite fantastical elements to tell its story. I’m really enjoying Sam Humphries’ writing and Jen Bartel’s interiors improve with every issue. I’m definitely looking forward to issue two. If you didn’t follow this series when it was being released monthly, now is your chance to catch up!
Captain Marvel #5
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Carmen Carnero
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artists: Amanda Conner & Paul Mounts
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: The first arc in this Captain Marvel run is truly absurd, but it’s so well-executed that I just love it, full-stop. This issue concludes the mess with Nuclear Man (hopefully for good) and I, for one, am excited to see Carol and her undercut take on this douchebag.
Long Ago & Far Away #2
Writer: Chris Mancini
Artist: Fernando Pinto
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Publisher: SBI Press
Samantha: SBI Press released some funky new titles last week and this one, which is all about Jason the Child Knight, former champion of Elvenwood and current manager of a comics shop (and an asshole), is so far a really enjoyable ride. New issues hit ComiXology every Wednesday and I’m definitely grabbing this.
Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider, Vol. 1: Spider-Geddon
Writer: Seanan McGuire
Artists: Rosi Kämpe & Takeshi Miyazawa
Colorist: Ian Herring
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Bengal
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: This first, four-issue arc of Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider is all about the multiverse and how Gwen copes with the grief of losing so many fellow spider-people. These issues are heavy, but feature fascinating dives into who this Gwen is and who she could have been, had things been just a little bit different.
Unstoppable Wasp #7
Writer: Jeremy Whitley
Artist: Alti Firmansyah
Colorist: Espen Grundetjern
Letterer: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover Artist: Stacey Lee
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Samantha: NADIA IS HAVING HER FIRST-EVER BIRTHDAY PARTY AND BUCKY BARNES WILL BE THERE! I’m genuinely stoked for this issue and I know Jeremy Whitley will knock the script out of the park. Unstoppable Wasp is one of the best ongoing series at Marvel right now, so if you haven’t caught up, I strongly encourage you to get on it!
War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery #2
Writers: The McElroys
Artist: André Lima Araújo
Colorist: Chris O’Halloran
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artists: Valerio Schiti & David Curiel
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: I haven’t been keeping up with War of the Realms, but the first issue of the McElroy’s foray into writing Marvel comics was super fun and delightful. I love reading a fun comic at a time where a lot of superhero stories like wallowing in the darkness behind it all. The team is whacky, but not too far out there and the tone is light even if the stakes are high. I can’t wait to pick this up and you should too!
X-Force #7
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artists: Dylan Burnett & Damian Couceiro
Colorist: Jesus Aburtov
Letterer: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover Artists: Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Ghost: In X-Force #6, the first arc that had seemed to drag on and on finally ended. Kid Cable has given himself over to Stryfe, the eternal struggle between them spilling into the modern X-Men timeline. I’m excited to keep reading X-Force for two reasons, one: with Kid Cable out of the picture, Ed Brisson can maybe focus on the rest of the team; two: I love looking at Dylan Burnett’s art and I will simply take that stance to the grave. I want this book to come together and I hope it does before the series ends.
